Central Canadian Barren Ground Caribou Hunts

The central canadian barren ground caribou is found in the mainland NWT, mainland Nunavut, Northeast Alberta, northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and Greenland (Yes – Greenland is considered part of North America).  This type of caribou also includes the Arctic Islands caribou which are found in the arctic islands of the NWT and Nunavut.

In general, the central candian barren ground caribou are slightly smaller than barren ground caribou, with bulls weighing anywhere from 250 to 400 pounds and antlers 10-15% smaller.  However, they still make fine trophies, on par with the Quebec-Labrador caribou.  To make the record book, a caribou will score 360 inches or more.  The arctic island caribou are typically smaller than their mainland cousins and lighter in color.

Best Places to hunt Central Canadian Barren Ground Caribou!

Nunavut, Manitoba and Greenland have been the best recent producers of record book animals.  The NWT used to produce some great bulls, however hunting for caribou in the NWT is now closed.  There is also recent talk of limiting sport hunting for caribou in Nunavut.  Hunts in Manitoba can be productive but are very weather dependent to have the migration come that far south.  So, the most consistent hunts are currently in Nunavut and Greenland.

Hunts in Nunavut generally target the Qamanirjuaq herd in August and September and are typically conducted with the use of boats or ATV’s out of comfortable camps or spike camps depending on where the caribou are located.  These hunts are great for both rifle and archery hunters.  Hunts in Nunavut for arctic island caribou normally occur in October and November and typically use ATV’s or snowmobiles to access the caribou.  These hunts are often combined with muskox hunting.

Hunting for central canadian barren ground caribou in Greenland is fantastic and consistent.  Also often combined with muskox, these hunts are highly successful and our areas have good concentrations of both species.  These hunts take place in late August to early October, which generally means decent weather.  Cabin accommodations with the use of boats and on foot, this is a hunt anyone can do.  Experiencing the culture of Greenland and seeing the ice cap just enhances the experience.
